Teaching at Village Academies

Village Academies is a network of charter schools in Harlem unlike any other.  We emphatically believe that excellent teachers are the most important element of excellent schools. Therefore, we have thoughtfully designed every aspect of our schools to support, develop, respect, guide, nurture, and empower our teachers.

Village Academies teachers are energized by working every day with an amazing team of talented, hard working, fun, intelligent colleagues, who are passionate about educational excellence.

Teaching at Village Academies is an opportunity to work with extraordinary educators, in a school that provides unparalleled support to teachers. We are passionate about serving the needs of our students, and equally passionate about supporting each teacher to learn and grow as an educator.  Teachers are provided with professional office space, computers, and an administrative support staff that is helpful and positive.  Our teachers commit to a longer school day and year and a strong sense of personal accountability for student achievement results.

Village Academies teachers . . .

Collaborate weekly to share best practices. Village Academies teachers work in grade level teams to discuss each student's individual needs, develop new ideas and refine current programs, and to solve problems together.  Teachers collaborate on a daily and weekly basis in department teams to continually improve instruction, look at student work together and refine lesson plans.

Enjoy extensive professional support. Every teacher at Village Academies is respected as a scholar and a professional.  Teachers receive professional office space, computers, email, voicemail, and off-site access to the school's computer network. Faculty assistants provide daily administrative support such as photocopying and paperwork.

Feel appreciated, empowered and respected. Village Academies deeply values teachers.  Our teachers are empowered to make important decisions about curriculum, lesson plans and instructional methods. Teacher input and feedback is welcome and teachers' ideas are respected. Our outstanding achievement results and school systems and programs have been created by our teachers!

Learn and grow as professionals. The growth of the Village Academies network of schools provides exciting career growth opportunities for teachers, such as becoming a mentor teacher, grade team leader, dean or principal.

Receive unparalleled professional development. Every summer, teachers participate in the Village Academies Summer Institute — an incredible learning experience featuring best practices sharing, collaborative lesson planning, and assessment analysis training. Throughout the year, teachers share lesson plan ideas, receive personalized instructional coaching and weekly professional development, and continually improve their craft.

Work as a team with smart, caring colleagues. What teachers say they love the most about Village Academies is belonging to a team of like-minded colleagues — teachers who are intelligent, creative, committed to children, serious professionals — and fun to work with! The sense of teamwork is incredibly energizing, and enables each teacher to contribute in a meaningful way to building an excellent school for our students.

Feel the deep satisfaction of improving the lives of children in our community.  We serve children from low performing school districts in Harlem.  With rigorous standards for academics and behavior, 98% of our 7th and 8th graders passed the New York State math test.  Homework completion is at 97% and attendance is at 96%.  Village Academies teachers are building schools that are recognized as a national model for educational excellence.
